Studio Ghibli fans are still packing theaters for the Kiki's Delivery Service 4K re-release a month later

Kiki’s Delivery Service Still Flying High: Mid-July Box Office Update

Is there ever a bad time to watch a Studio Ghibli masterpiece? Apparently, the answer is a hard no. Hayao Miyazaki’s 1989 classic, Kiki’s Delivery Service, is proving that nostalgia is a powerful engine. Even in its fourth weekend of wide release, the 4K remastered version actually climbed a spot, landing at number seven on the charts for the July 10-12 frame.

The film’s jump is particularly impressive given its unique release strategy. After kicking off in IMAX theaters back in June, the 4K edition expanded to 116 locations across all 47 Japanese prefectures early this month. It even hit the world’s very first Dolby Cinema screenings for the title, giving fans a fresh way to experience Jiji’s sass and Kiki’s magical journey.

The Rest of the Weekend Breakdown

While Kiki is busy climbing the ranks, other heavy hitters are shuffling around. Soreike! Anpanman: Pantan and the Promised Star, the latest chapter in the long-running children’s series, slipped just one position to sixth place during its third weekend. It’s holding steady, showing that the Anpanman franchise remains a literal titan in Japanese family entertainment.

Then, there’s the sheer staying power of Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway. After bowing out of the top 10 last week, the film pulled a heroic comeback, sliding back into the 10th spot in its 14th weekend. This movie is an absolute beast—it has pulled in a staggering 13.57 billion yen (roughly 83.5 million USD) with over 9 million tickets sold. Conan fans clearly don’t know when to quit, and honestly, we love to see it.

What’s Missing and What’s New?

It wasn’t a win for everyone, though. The latest Sgt. Frog adventure, Shin Gekijoban Keroro Gunsou, unfortunately missed the cut for the top 10 list this past weekend. On the newer side of things, SHIBOYUGI: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table 44: CLOUDY BEACH made its debut. It hit 52 theaters on July 10, landing in 11th place. It seems to have had a modest start, pulling in a 3.23/5.0 score over at Filmarks based on initial fan reviews.

It’s wild to see decades-old classics going toe-to-toe with modern releases. Whether you're heading to the theater to catch Ghibli on the big screen or checking out the newest death-game thriller, it’s a busy time to be an anime fan in Japan!
