Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back film finally gets a main trailer and a fresh cast lineup

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back Live-Action Film Gets a Stunning New Trailer and Massive Cast Reveal

If you thought the 2024 anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back was emotional, brace yourself. We finally have a deeper look at the upcoming live-action film, and it’s shaping up to be something truly special. The official website just dropped a brand-new main trailer and some gorgeous poster visuals, giving us our best look yet at this highly anticipated project.

Directed by the legendary Hirokazu Kore-eda—whose work on Shoplifters proved he has a masterclass-level touch with character-driven dramas—this adaptation is slated for a September 11, 2026, release in Japan. And yes, for those wondering about the scope, the film will clock in at a 99-minute runtime, giving the story much more breathing room than the 58-minute anime version we saw last year.

A Massive Cast to Bring the Story to Life

We already knew that Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita would be taking on the lead roles of Fujino and Kyomoto, with Furi Nanase and Rikka Okada portraying their childhood versions. But today, the production team pulled back the curtain on six additional cast members who will round out the world of Look Back:

  • Kayo Noro as Akari Fujino (Fujino’s mother)
  • Ryo Ikeda as Hitoshi Fujino (Fujino’s father)
  • Miyu Sasaki as Megumi Fujino (Fujino’s sister)
  • Maho Yamada as Manabe (Fujino’s middle school teacher)
  • Kankuro Kudo as Tamai (The girls' elementary teacher)
  • Masaki Suda as Maeda (The Weekly Shonen Jump editor)

Masaki Suda, a massive name in the industry, seemed genuinely stoked about the project. He mentioned how surreal it was to step onto the set, noting, “I kept wondering, ‘Was my character inspired by that person?’ ‘Was the set modeled on that actual manga editorial office?’ The entire shoot was filled with excitement.”

What We Know About the Film

Produced by Daiju Koide—the mastermind behind Shin Kamen Rider—at K2 Pictures, the film promises to capture that raw, 13-year journey of friendship and art that made the original 143-page one-shot such a hit. The story centers on the dynamic between the confident, outgoing Fujino and the reclusive, brilliant Kyomoto. Their bond, forged through a mutual love for drawing, is a touching exploration of youth that hits home for just about everyone.

If you're worried about missing out, don't sweat it. GKIDS has already confirmed they will be handling the release for the United States, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. Mark your calendars, because this is going to be one of the most talked-about live-action adaptations of the decade.
