Big news for fans of chaotic rom-coms! If you’ve been following the hilarious online antics of Kaoru and Nanami, get ready to celebrate. The manga Sometimes Even Reality is a Lie! is officially making the jump to the small screen with a TV anime adaptation slated for 2027.

The announcement came directly from the series creator, Niichi, over on X (formerly Twitter). Along with the big reveal, Niichi shared a super cute illustration featuring the two leads to get everyone hyped for the future premiere.

What’s the Hook?

If you haven’t checked out the source material yet, you’re in for a wild ride. The story centers on Kaoru Terasaki, an MMORPG enthusiast who spends his gaming time playing as a female avatar. Naturally, he eventually decides to meet his long-time in-game buddy in real life. He spends the whole time stressed out, terrified that his friend is going to be disappointed when they realize he’s actually a guy.

But when the day finally arrives, the tables turn completely. Not only is his gaming partner actually a girl named Nanami Osaka, but she has a massive problem: she told her incredibly overprotective father that she was bringing a female friend over. To keep the peace (and presumably his own skin), Kaoru has no choice but to cross-dress. The result? A series of hilarious misunderstandings and high-stakes social situations that are impossible not to root for.

What Do We Know So Far?

Right now, information is pretty scarce. Outside of the 2027 window, we don’t have any concrete details on who is helming the animation studio, the voice acting cast, or the specific staff members bringing this to life. Since the manga has been running strong since 2018—with eight collected volumes already on shelves in Japan—there is plenty of source material to pull from for a great adaptation.
