Final Fantasy X Turns 25: Square Enix Drops a Nostalgia-Filled Celebration

If you feel like you just played Final Fantasy X for the first time yesterday, I have some bad news: it’s officially been a quarter-century. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Spira’s most iconic adventure, Square Enix just dropped a special trailer that is going to hit every single one of your nostalgia buttons.

It’s hard to believe that Tidus and Yuna’s journey first hit the PlayStation 2 all the way back in 2001. That’s right—the game is officially old enough to handle adult responsibilities. While our joints might be creaking a little more than they used to, the game itself still looks surprisingly good.

Why FFX Still Matters

When Final Fantasy X landed on the scene, it changed the game for the entire industry. It was the first title in the series to introduce full voice acting and expressive facial animations. For a lot of us, seeing those cutscenes for the first time felt like watching a movie rather than playing a game. That emotional weight, combined with the epic quest to defeat Sin, is exactly why we are still talking about it today.
